Billy Joe Saunders edges out decision win against Akavov

December 3, 2016

After almost an entire year of not fighting and ducking everybody, middleweight world champion Billy Joe Saunders finally faced his hand picked, obscure, fringe contender opponent Artur Akavov.  And he almost lost.

Saunders looked slow the whole fight, and it certainly looked like he hadn’t fought in a year.  The judges scored it 116-113, 116-112, and 115-113.

Akavov was up on most people’s cards in the first half of the fight, but he faded in the final rounds.  Many had Akavov winning, or scored the fight a draw.  Some fans are screaming robbery, but this happens every time a fight is close.  I think it was a draw at best, though.

Saunders is going to have to put some serious work in if he is going to last even two rounds against Canelo Alvarez or Gennady Golovkin, both of whom he has repeatedly said he will face next year.  If this version of Saunders shows up against one of those two, it’s going to be an ugly and short night for him.

After the fight, Saunders made excuses about being rusty after a long layoff.  Despite him having injuries, most of this layoff was self imposed.  Hopefully he will face someone that will beat him in his next fight so that we can have a more legitimate champion.
