BLOCKBUSTER: McGregor-Dos Anjos, Holm-Tate Doubleheader At UFC 197
January 8, 2016
The UFC is wasting no time in making 2016 its biggest year ever with this leak from sources.
In what will surely be one of the UFC’s most exciting cards ever, two blockbuster title fights will reportedly headline the UFC 197 pay-per-view card on March 5 in Las Vegas. The first will pit the new UFC featherweight champion, and biggest personality in the sport, Conor McGregor against the feared lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos for his championship. The boisterous McGregor wants to become the first UFC fighter in history to hold 2 division titles at the same time and UFC President Dana White will let him make that happen. McGregor would become only the third fighter ever to win UFC titles in multiple weight classes- Randy Couture and BJ Penn are the others. McGregor is coming off a 13-second knockout win over the former featherweight champion, and one of the pound for pound best fighters in the world Jose Aldo on Dec. 12. It was the fastest finish in UFC title-fight history. However, the heavier champion Rafael dos Anjos is also coming off of a first-round knockout in December, a 66-second TKO against Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone on Dec. 19, the first defense of his title.
Not to be outdone, the new female bantamweight champion Holly Holm, fresh off her 2nd round KO over the once unbeatable Ronda Rousey, will headline the co-main event, as she defends her title for the first time against longtime contender, and former Rousey foe Miesha Tate. Holm will be competing for the first time under the new terms of a longterm contract extension she signed with the UFC last weekend. Holm, a decorated former boxing and kickboxing world champion, is expected to fight Rousey in a much hyped rematch should she get through Tate-likely in July at UFC 200. Tate, a former Strikeforce titleholder, is currently riding a four fight winning streak. What makes this specific fight interesting, is Tate was promised a title shot against Rousey last summer, however the UFC decided to book Holm and Rousey instead at the 11th hour. Tate hasn’t fought since a decision win against Jessica Eye in July.
Although multiple sources have confirmed the bouts to major news outlets such as BleacherReport and ESPN, and the UFC has not officially announced either fight yet, as official agreements have not yet been signed.
UFC 197 was originally expected to take place in Brazil, however it will now take place in Vegas at either the MGM Grand Garden Arena or Mandalay Bay Events Center.
