Canelo hopes to fight three times next year - will he face GGG?

November 30, 2016

According to Golden Boy Promotions president Eric Gomez and ESPN, star fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is on track to fight three times next year, with the third fight being a long awaited showdown between him and Gennady Golovkin.

Alvarez is currently on the mend from breaking his hand during his September 17th fight against the overmatched Liam Smith.  Alvarez vacated his middleweight belt prior to that fight (which most believe was because he didn’t want to face Golovkin) and dropped down to junior middleweight to fight Smith.  He KO’d Smith during round nine in dominant fashion.

“Canelo is back in training. He’s keeping himself in shape, but he hasn’t started using the right hand yet because he still has some more physical therapy to do,” Gomez said. “He still needs a couple of more sessions and what we agreed to do is reconvene after that.”

Alvarez will hopefully have his next fight in the beginning of next year.  But Gomez caveated that and said,  “His hand is a lot better. But we’re not going to take any chances. Any discomfort once he starts using the right hand and we’re not messing around. If he has any discomfort, we’ll just wait until May.”

Canelo’s next fight will be announced in December if his hand is feeling good at that point.  It would be a non-PPV HBO event.  That fight would likely be against a weaker opponent as a warm-up from what I can tell.

I would think that in an ideal world his mid-year fight (which would be on Cinco De Mayo) would be against Billy Joe Saunders for his middleweight title.  That would give Alvarez and Golden Boy more negotiating power against Golovkin, who they still “plan” to fight in September.

I hope GGG-Alvarez happens in September.  But I haven’t seen anything that makes me think that Golden Boy is going to offer Golovkin any more than they already have.  Their offers to him have been way too low, I hope that they make him a legitimate offer so that this mega-fight can finally happen.
