Canelo plans on defending junior middleweight title
December 2, 2016
One might think that with his and Golden Boy Promotion’s supposed big plans to fight Gennady Golovkin next September that Canelo Alvarez would want to fight at 160 upon return from his hand injury. But according to Golden Boy president Eric Gomez, that isn’t the case, RingTV.com reports. Depending on whether or not his hand is ready for a fight at the beginning of the year, he may actually defend his junior middleweight title that he won this year fighting the overmatched Liam Smith before moving back up to middleweight
“If it’s the first quarter, then he likely stays at 154,” Gomez said. “If it’s in May, then the likelihood is that it will be at middleweight. But the plan is Golovkin. There’s no secret. We’ve been in discussions. We’ve been negotiating. I feel that we’re close. That’s his objective. That’s what Oscar (De La Hoya, Golden Boy CEO) wants. That’s what Canelo wants. That’s what we’re trying to make happen.”
It’s really an odd move if you ask me. Maybe Canelo feels some need to legitimize moving back down to 154 in the first place. If you saw his fight against Liam Smith you could probably tell that he is a middleweight. The dude looked like the Hulk compared to Smith, and it’s got to be hard for him to get down to 154 at this point in his career.
Gomez said that Canelo’s May fight would either be against David Lemieux or Billy Joe Saunders. I would imagine that they would much prefer Saunders if he still has his title, so that they would have a little more leverage in the Golovkin fight that they supposedly are penciling in for September. Plus Lemieux is a pretty big puncher and you never know what could happen against a guy like that. But who knows if Saunders will ever actually decide to face a real opponent.
I’m not sure what Alvarez plans on doing at junior middleweight, or if Golden Boy’s plans actually include Canelo-GGG in September. I guess we’ll just have to wait to find out…getting tired of waiting on these guys!
