Canelo: To Be a Legend, You Have To Beat Cotto
August 31, 2015
Canelo Alvarez understands the significance of his fight against WBC Middleweight champion Miguel Cotto on November 21st. Not just because it’s for a middleweight title, not just because it’s Mexico Vs. Puerto Rico, but because in Canelo’s eyes, to become a legend, you have to get through Miguel Cotto.
Canelo had his first shot to defeat a living legend in September of 2013, when he challenged Floyd Mayweather Jr. at the MGM Grand, which Mayweather won easily giving Canelo his first defeat.
“Look, I think for a fight like you need to have extended negotiations. They took a while because they had to take to make the two parties happy, to ensure that Cotto was happy and I was happy. It is best for both sides to be satisfied,” Canelo said
“So we made the fight and now I am very happy because, as I said, because it’s an honor for me to fight with Miguel Angel Cotto, who has won everything, and he’s going to be a legend in boxing. To become a legend, you have to beat a fighter like Miguel Angel Cotto. I am honored to fight someone like him.”
