Canelo vs Cotto II possible for 2017

October 21, 2016

Canelo Alvarez has expressed interest in fighting Miguel Cotto again next year, according to BoxingScene.

“For me, it would be an honor to have a return fight with Miguel Angel Cotto.  But let’s see what happens.  There have been no discussions about that [fight]. But let’s see if that can be done,” Canelo said during the World Boxing Organization’s convention in Puerto Rico.

Golden Boy Promotions, Canelo’s promoter, also shows interest in this fight.  The head matchmaker, Robert Diaz, had this to say.

“[2017] will be a great year for Canelo, the fans and for the fans of Canelo Alvarez.  Yes [a rematch with Cotto] is definitely possible.  The first was a very good fight.”

For his part, Cotto was pretty vague as to whether he was interested.  He said, “These types of things are discussed and then agreements are reached down the line.  But as far as the immediate future of Miguel Cotto, I don’t know what to say right now, there’s nothing official.”

This would be a decent fight that at least could generate some interest, especially since their first fight last November was heavily contested.  Canelo won by unanimous decision but many thought it was a draw or could have gone to Cotto.  Cotto himself believed he won.

But all in all, most boxing fans could probably care less whether or not this fight happens. Everybody just wants to see GGG-Canelo.
