Canelo vs Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. has a potential date

December 15, 2016

This has escalated so quickly.

After years of total irrelevancy, apparently all Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. had to do to get a shot at one of the biggest names in boxing was to make weight and win one fight.  According to, Chavez Jr.’s team is in discussion with Golden Boy Promotions to schedule a May 6th bout between him and Canelo Alvarez.

According to Chavez’s attorney Guadalupe Valencia, the fight would be at a catch-weight of 165 pounds.  I assume that means that it would be a non-title fight.

“There are good faith discussions taking place.  The whole Chavez team – which includes Julio, Chavez Sr., Rodolfo Chavez, Al Haymon, and myself – we really want this fight and we hope to make it happen.”

Chavez was well under the contracted weight of his last fight, which was 169 pounds.  He weighed in at 167.8 pounds.  Valencia said he would be totally fine making 165.

“Julio had no trouble making the weight last week.  He felt very strong in the ring and he had a great performance.  Going to 165 will be a little tougher, but fighting in May would give him more than enough time to make that weight.  I don’t believe that weight will affect him.”
