Errol Spence Jr wants to fight Brook, Garcia/Thurman, then Pacquiao

(One thing before the article – check out today’s “Blow-by-Blow” if you haven’t already. This will be a daily bullet-point style article that’s packed with lots of boxing info. Today’s featured an Anthony Joshua vs Mike Tyson comparison, info about a possible Pacquiao-Canelo fight, and much more.)
Errol Spence Jr. has ambition!
The 26 year old New York native is one of the most exciting up and coming fighters. He has completely decimated everyone he’s faced thus far, with 18 of his 21 pro victories coming by way of knockout. He has proved himself against decent competition, too. He KO’d Chris Algieri earlier this year, which was something neither Manny Pacquiao or Amir Khan were able to do.
Spence has been wanting to step up his competition to the next level for a while, but has had difficulty getting fighters who are willing to face him. Nobody wants to face a young knockout machine that many people don’t know about.
Spence is the mandatory challenger for Kell Brook’s IBF welterweight strap. For a while, many were doubting if Brook would make that defense. He had moved up to 160 to face Gennady Golovkin earlier this year, and many assumed he wouldn’t move back down. Brook however has been adamant recently that he will make the defense against Spence, which probably isn’t what he wants to do. He would rather face Danny Garcia or Keith Thurman, but he won’t be able to wait that long since they are fighting in March. He would also like to face Pacquiao, but he is likely towards the end of the list of people Pacquiao would want to fight. So Brook may have no choice but to face Spence.
Spence is hungry for Brook to say the least, but he doesn’t want to stop there. He told BoxingScene.com that after Spence he would want to face the winner of the Garcia-Thurman fight. If he beats Spence that fight would be the obvious next step. All three guys are promoted by Al Haymon hopefully that would happen without a hitch.
“When I win this world title [against Brook] then I want to fight the winner of Keith Thurman and Danny Garcia and unify. Then hopefully I can fight Pacquiao and become the undisputed welterweight champion of the world. That is one of my goals,” Spence said.
Sounds a little crazy for such a young fighter to face Pacquiao, but IF he beats Brook and IF he beats the Garcia/Thurman winner it’s a (small) possibility. He would have the WBC, IBF, and WBA titles, and assuming Pacquiao still holds the WBO title, Spence’s name would be hard to ignore for Pac. The Filipino legend could have different ideas as to what he wants to do at the end of his career, and he could be retired by that point. But if he is going to keep boxing for the next year-plus, retains his welterweight title, and wants to remain a top fighter, he might have no choice but to face Spence if this scenario comes to fruition. There are a ton of moving parts though, and this is still a long way out.
Lots of “if’s” but I don’t think this is totally outside the realm of possibility. Do you think this is a viable career path for Errol Spence Jr.? Let us know in the comments below, we are trying Disqus now, so see what you think!
