Kell Brook vs Amir Khan being negotiated

December 15, 2016

After a couple days of the two having it out on social media, a fight between Kell Brook and Amir Khan is being negotiated, according to ESPN.

In the last couple months since being TKO’d by Gennady Golovkin, in a move up two weight classes, Brook has been adamant that he would move back down to welterweight to defend his IBF title against Errol Spence Jr.  There has been a lot of speculation that he would rather not do that, and was only thinking about it because he had no other viable options.  A fight with Khan would be viable, however.

According to Matchroom’s Eddie Hearn (Brook’s agent), the two are very far apart on an agreement, though a May 2017 date is being discussed.  This fight would be huge in the UK, though it probably would have been a lot bigger about a year ago before Khan was embarrassed by Canelo Alvarez.  The two have negotiated a fight before, but it never happened, supposedly because Khan didn’t want it.  It’s been suggested that Khan may want this fight now due to the fact that he thinks Brook will have trouble getting back down to 147.

I will still hold out hope for a Spence-Brook fight for now since Brook and Khan are so far apart in negotiations.  I would love to see Spence get a big fight.  I am unsure what this would mean as far as Brook’s mandatory defense.  I guess it would be up to the IBF as to whether they would let Brook fight Khan instead of Spence or if they would strip his title.
