Mandatory challengers announced for GGG, Garcia/Thurman, more

December 15, 2016

The WBC convention has been going on this week, and the big thing that came out of it yesterday was the announcement of mandatory challengers for their belt holders.

Some notable ones:
The winner of Eleider Alvarez vs Lucian Bute on February 24th will face Adonis Stevenson (light heavyweight).  There hasn’t been a mandatory defense for this belt in three years.

The winner of Badau Jack vs James DeGale must face Callum Smith (super middleweight)

There will be a four man tournament to decide Gennady Golovkin‘s next mandatory challenger (middleweight)

Jermell Charlo must face “Silver” titlist Charles Hatley in February (junior middleweight)

The welterweight division is in flux, but Amir Khan is the mandatory challenger for the winner of Danny Garcia and Keith Thurman. Khan asked for an extension on saying whether he actually wants to be the mandatory, which was granted. They also ordered that Errol Spence Jr. face Tim Bradley. If Spence faces Kell Brook, however, Bradley would become the mandatory challenger.

The winner of January 29th’s fight between Dejan Zlaticanin and Mikey Garcia will face Jorge Linares (Lightweight)

As I said yesterday, the winner of Roman Gonzalez and Carlos Cuadras will face Sor Rungvisai (junior bantamweight)

You can check out the full list here.  Note that although these challengers have been announced, they will always let the fighters put them off if they are looking into getting a bigger fight.  It will be interesting to see which of these fights actually end up happening.
