Marquez not retiring, going into January training camp

December 3, 2016

Juan Manuel Marquez says he will continue fighting, and will enter a serious training camp starting in January.

He has talked about this a bit in previous months, saying that he wants to fight again but wasn’t sure how his body would respond to training.  He still hasn’t been able to find an opponent, but apparently his body feels good.  He wants a fight in April or May.

“It is time for a strong return.  It could be in May, but nothing is certain, Marquez told ESPN Deportes.  “The important thing is to be well.  The knee is doing much better, the preparation is much better.”

“We have to see what happens.  If there is a big fight, both for me and the fans, it would have to be a fighter that people are interested in viewing [My return] would be in April or May.  I’ll start training, well i’m already training, but in January I will begin a full camp.”

Marquez hasn’t faced anyone since beating Mike Alvarado in 2014.  A fight between him and Miguel Cotto had been discussed, but they haven’t  been able to agree on a weight.  Marquez said he would fight at 148, but Cotto wanted to be somewhere closer to 154.  Cotto is also probably going to fight James Kirkland in February (on PPV, which is totally insane.  Who would pay to see that?)

I know a lot of people would be interested in him facing Manny Pacquiao again, but Marquez has said that he isn’t interested in facing him again because he thinks that he already beat him in all four fights.  Pacquiao said last month that he would want to fight him again.  So we’ll see what Marquez decides to do.
