Miguel Cotto's next opponent set

December 7, 2016

According to ESPN, Miguel Cotto will face James Kirkland on February 25th in Frisco, Texas.

The fight will be at junior middleweight, and will be on HBO PPV.  Roc Nation Sports, who is putting on the event, apparently owes Cotto $10 million.  They are probably going to lose a lot of money, because I can’t imagine many people would pay for this.

Cotto is an all time great, but this just isn’t the type of fight you’d want to see him in at this point, especially for a PPV.  He hasn’t been in the ring for 15 months and his last fight was the bad loss to Canelo Alvarez.  Kirkland also last faced Alvarez, that was in May 2015.  That was an especially ugly fight, as Alvarez KO’d him big time in the third round.  With those things in mind, Cotto-Kirkland isn’t exactly a relevant matchup.

“We tried to do other fights, but you know how the business is,” Cotto Promotions executive Bryan Perez said. “Kirkland was there, he was willing to fight Miguel, he makes good fights, and we made the fight. Miguel will do his best to give a great show and an exciting fight.”

The undercard is probably going to include Guillermo Rigondeaux making a mandatory defense against Moises Flores.  Rigondeaux has famously been ducked by everyone throughout his career, and has mostly only faced mediocre opposition.  Flores is undefeated but hasn’t faced anyone of note so we’ll see if it’ll be more of the same for Rigo.

Would you pay for this card?  I wouldn’t!
