Usyk TKO's Mchunu in 9th round

December 17, 2016

Wasn’t the prettiest fight, but Oleksandr Usyk knocked down Thabiso Mchunu three times en route to a TKO victory on the undercard of Bernard Hopkins’ final bout.

The height and reach advantage that Usyk had was almost comical, and it made it very awkward for the fighters to hit each other.  Usyk barely threw a punch in the first two rounds as he tried to figure out how to handle the awkward Mchunu.  The action was pretty slow for the first half of the fight.

Eventually, Usyk solved Mchunu and began throwing lots of combinations and putting constant pressure on his opponent.  Mchunu was able to throw effective punches all the way to the end of the fight, but in the end the tough South African was outsized and outclassed by Usyk.

Probably not a showing that is going to get a lot of people super excited to see Usyk again, especially the first half of the fight, but it wasn’t bad.  He is still one to watch going forward.
